Shubman Gill's maiden Test series as captain of India is proving to be a daunting task, and Day 3 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford indicated why. England, through Joe Root's century, got the upper hand in the match, with Gill struggling to cope with both a struggling bowling attack as well as difficult on-field decisions. India was bowled out for 358 on Day 2, and their bowlers had a tough time making an early impact. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett set England flying, scoring 166 runs for the first wicket. Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Anshul Kamboj were the ones to eventually break the stand, but England had already taken the game by the scruff of its neck. On Day 3, England's supremacy just kept growing as their aggregate crossed 460. Root's century only contributed to India's misery as their bowlers were unable to generate sufficient pressure. But it was not the runs alone that damaged India; their application of the Decision Review System (DRS) became the subject of much debate. A video posted by Star Sports on X (formerly Twitter) from the game featured Gill standing in the middle of an intense review debate with his teammates. Washington Sundar insisted on the review, claiming, "It wasn't that high. It didn't even go that high." KL Rahul, though, presented a different perspective, pointing out, "It's not height. You know how far he played? Three meters." The decision contributed further to the pressure on Gill, particularly as India had lost two reviews previously, both while Mohammed Siraj was in the act of bowling. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar weighed in on the incident during an appearance on Star Sports, giving credit to Rahul for his role in the situation. "KL Rahul was the voice of sense. His advice was spot-on and Gill should perhaps take more advice from him," Manjrekar said. With England still piling on the runs and Stokes holding their innings together, Gill now has a huge test as captain. India requires a turnaround in the opening session of Day 4 so that they do not fall further behind in the series.
