As the end of the 4th Test between India and England at Old Trafford approached, a shocking moment took place. As the match was moving towards a draw, England skipper Ben Stokes extended a handshake to finish the match. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar declined the handshake and continued batting. The move clearly irked Stokes and English players. At the same time, cameras recorded Shubman Gill having a laugh in the Indian dressing room, injecting a note of humour into the charged moment. It was a dramatic but small ending to a tough Test that kept the series alive. After agonizing defeats at Headingley and Lord's, the team displayed exemplary strength of will and heart in Manchester. With the series suspended in the balance, India were buried under a heap of runs and had to bat for five full sessions to salvage the match. They did it with coolness, concentration, and grit. The last day had threatened to push their mental and physical limits, but the batters held firm. England did get their chances there was uneven bounce and footmarks on the pitch for the batters to deal with but they could not exert persistent pressure. Fielding mishaps and an insipidness in the bowling, particularly in Stokes' absence, made life more difficult for them. Conversely, India's batsmen, spearheaded by level-headed knocks from the middle order, were batting with considerable skill and maturity. With Shubman Gill's captaincy, the side was brimming with confidence even in adverse situations. Though India was unable to win the series, they kept it alive ahead of the final Test. It was the performance that had the potential to define the personality of this young side one that battles, hangs in, and gets better with each challenge.
