A light-hearted moment from the Rohit Sharma Stand unveiling ceremony at Wankhede Stadium has gone viral, featuring former India coach Ravi Shastri. During the grand felicitation on Friday, Shastri jokingly asked Rohit to mark the occasion with a six into the stand named after him. In the video, Shastri can be seen hugging the former Mumbai Indians captain as he says 'Smack one there'. Rohit Sharma immediately replies- 'It will happen'. The moment added an extra layer of joy to an already emotional and historic day for the India ODI skipper. The MCA renamed the Level 3 Divecha Pavilion as the ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ to honour the 37-year-old’s decorated career. Rohit becomes only the fifth cricketer to have a stand named after him at the Wankhede, joining the likes of Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar. His parents, wife Ritika Sajdeh, and brother Vishal were present at the event, which was also attended by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and several cricketing greats. In an interview with the ICC, the former coach said he disagreed with Rohit’s decision to step aside during a live series. “I told him, if I were the coach, you would have never not played that last Test. You don’t leave the team at 2-1 with the series still alive. That Sydney pitch was spicy, and Rohit’s the kind of player who could’ve turned it around with even 35-40 runs at the top," Shastri said. Rohit, who continues to play ODIs, had already retired from T20Is after India’s World Cup win in 2024. He also announced his Test retirement recently. Rohit will be back in action for the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 21 as MI host Delhi Capitals.
