Shreyas Iyer's weakness against the short ball is well known and the England bowlers kept targeting the right-handers with the short deliveries to exploit his weakness in the 1st ODI at Nagpur. On the last two deliveries of the seventh over of the chase, Jofra Archer bowled two consecutive short balls to Iyer, but the Indian batter was well prepared this time. The decision of bowling short to Iyer back-fired after the 30-year-old smashed two consecutive sixes on both the deliveries. Archer bowled the fifth delivery at rapid pace of 144.8 km/h, and it was short and outside off. Iyer got enough room to play a pull shot on the back foot and smash it over the deep mid-wicket for a huge six. The very next delivery was also a short pitch, again outside off and Iyer slashed it for a six over the third-man boundary. With two consecutive sixes off Archer's short balls, Iyer silenced the short-ball critics, proving his ability to handle short-pitched bowling. This was second fastest fifty in ODI for him, the fastest being 28-ball which came against West Indies in Vizag in 2018. He came to bat when India was struggling at 19/2, having lost both their openers, Rohit Sharma (2) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (15) cheaply to Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood. A wicket or two at this stage would worsened things for India, but Iyer, along with Shubman Gill, took the charge of the innings and the duo batted well from that point onwards. At the time of writing, India is in a commanding position with the score of 111/2 in 15 overs.
