The 22-year-old spinner Dunith Wellage did not have a great day despite Sri Lanka defeating Afghanistan. Mohammad Nabi, from Afghanistan, was almost on the edge of breaking Yuvraj Singh sis-sixes an over record against young Wellage. Later, after the match, the Sri Lanka head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, along with the team's manager came and informed Dunith that his father, Suranga Wellalage, had passed away. In a viral video, Dunith was seen all padded up for his batting turn when Jayasuria came and informed him about the loss. He was then seen patting Dunith and consoling him repeatedly before Dunith walked away towards the dressing room. Recalling Wellalage's cricketing life, Arnold said how Suranga led the Prince of Wales College while Arnold was leading his own St. Peter's school. While doing commentary on Sony Sports, Russell Arnold said, "Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga, passed away just a while ago. He played a bit of cricket too. You know how big our school cricket scene is. He captained Prince of Wales College when I captained my school, St Peter’s." He added, "Quite sad to hear that. The news was broken to Dunith just a while ago. And our condolences to the family. The celebrations will be muted. The team is in a tight place, the dressing room. Hopefully, this bonds them and helps them go on and do well in the Super 4 stage." Dunith Wellalage was taken apart for 49 runs, giving away five sixes in a single over as Afghanistan piled up 169/8. But Sri Lanka made light work of the chase, reaching the target with six wickets in hand and eight balls remaining. Kusal Mendis anchored the innings with an unbeaten 74, guiding Sri Lanka into the Super 4s and knocking Afghanistan out of the tournament.
