The India captain Rohit Sharma was involved in an animated discussion with on-field umpire Michael Gough during the fourth day of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Rohit requested the umpire not to call for stoppage of play due to poor light. He wanted play to go on so that there would be a chance to get early wicket while defending just 107 runs. Virat Kohli too joined the debate and tried to convince the officials to let the game go ahead went on for some time. After all the effort India put in, the umpires declared that it was not safe enough to continue further. Thick clouds covered the sky, and even with the floodlights on, the visibility was not enough. The light meter was also used and the officials stuck to their decision which clearly frustrated the Indian team. Just a little later, rain clouds rolled in, and the ground staff covered the pitch immediately preparing for further delays. Sarfaraz Khan played a fantastic knock of 150 runs, while Rishabh Pant contributed 99 runs. After tea India's last four wickets went in a hurry, and the innings ended at 462 runs after 99.3 overs. Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj were all dismissed as India looked to set a competitive target. Bad light and rain consigned the day to an early end, leaving India to defend only 107 runs on the final day. But weather-wise, it remains the biggest issue, as New Zealand would be hoping for enough rain to force a delay on India's bowling and make a chase more likely for them in-order to take 1-0 lead in the series.
