Rishabh Pant got to his half-century in typical Pant style unpredictable, entertaining, and successful. In the first Test against England at Headingley, he got to his fifty with a mistimed slog-sweep off Chris Woakes. The ball came off the toe end of the bat but still sped past mid-on for four. It wasn't an aesthetically pleasing shot, but Pant didn't care. With his belligerent purpose, he indicated that he was prepared to confront the new ball without restraint. Among wicketkeeper-batters, only Australia's Adam Gilchrist has achieved the feat faster, managing it in 63 innings. Pant's feat is an indicator of his remarkable consistency and influence in red-ball cricket. Since his introduction to Test cricket, he has redefined the role of a modern wicketkeeper through his aggressive strokeplay and capacity to turn the tide of a match. Whether it is scoring, game-changing knocks abroad or saving India from difficult spots, Pant has made his mark and continues to develop as a vital member of the Indian Test team. Jaiswal and Gill Shine Bright as India Dominate Day 1 India could have not requested a finer beginning to the Test. Once inserted to bat, the openers set the stage right. The surface, which came alive a bit early, soon flattened out and India cashed in. Yashasvi Jaiswal played a smooth century, and Shubman Gill produced his captaincy debut century with a calm, unflappable stroke. It was a dream beginning, all going right. England, however, were left seething. Ben Stokes might already be regretting choosing to bowl first. He did pick up two wickets Sudharsan and Jaiswal but his bowling attack didn't provide much assistance. Brydon Carse picked up KL Rahul during the first session, but that was all. The second half of the day was dominated by India as the English bowlers seemed exhausted and clueless. Going into Day 2, England will have a lot to think about.
