Sri Lanka won the toss in the second T20I against West Indies and elected to bat first. Their opening pair, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis, could not get a very fast start since they could score only 8 runs in the first three overs. Things changed quite dramatically in the fourth over, the 2nd of Shamar Joseph, who came into the attack. On strike was Nissanka, who smashed five consecutive fours against Joseph and threw open his shoulders. On the second ball, Nissanka hit his first boundary over extra cover. He followed that up with a top-edged third delivery, which sailed over short fine leg for four. The fourth ball saw Nissanka use his feet and hit another four through wide mid-off. His last ball, an even slower back of a length one, provided enough space for Nissanka, and he cut that piece around the back of point for the fifth four of the over with the bat. Joseph finally leaked 25 runs from that over, as Nissanka's aggressive play changed the course of the innings for Lanka. His quick runs helped the side recover a slow start, putting it under pressure to the West Indies bowlers at the beginning of the game. Nissanka's innings came to an end at 54 which came in 49 balls and his knock comprised of 9 fours and 1 maximum. Alzarri Joseph cleaned up the Lankan opener on the final ball of the 16th over.
