Marco Jansen provided South Africa a massive breakthrough in the opening session of Day 1 of the WTC Final 2025 at Lord's by dismissing Travis Head with a sharp ball down the leg-side. It was a full ball from Jansen that curved towards Head's legs. The Australian left-hander attempted a flick, but the ball grazed his bat ever so lightly. Quick-thinking South African wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne dived to his right and pulled off an excellent one-handed catch. It was a moment of special excitement, since catching that type of ball is never simple, particularly if the ball is traveling quickly down leg. Players from South Africa sprinted towards Verreynne in celebration as Head seemed stunned and walked back slowly. Head scored 11 runs off 13 balls, with one boundary, before his dismissal. The wicket was extremely crucial for South Africa, and Jansen celebrated the occasion with a wide smile. This wicket provided the Proteas with a boost as they aim to gain control in this huge final. At the end of 1st session, South Africa is in complete control as they have restricted Australia at 67 for 4. The Proteas bowling caused early problems, testing the Australian top order. Kagiso Rabada was the spearhead with two swift wickets. He first got rid of Usman Khawaja for a duck with a ball that cut only enough to catch the edge. Just a couple of balls after that, he dismissed Cameron Green, who edged one to the slips again. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith attempted to steady the innings afterwards, but Labuschagne lost his wicket to a thin outside edge off Marco Jansen's delivery. He then dismissed Travis Head with a leg-side delivery, where wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne made a spectacular one-handed catch diving to his right. Steve Smith was involved in a close LBW appeal, but it remained with the umpire's decision, leaving him at the crease. After a hard fought first session, Australia ended at 67 for 4 in 23.2 overs at Lunch. Smith remained unbeaten on 26 as Lunch as called in post Head's wicket.
