England wicket-keeper batter Jamie Smith was unfortunately out early on day one of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's. Smith was played on his stumps by a ball from Kyle Jamieson. His early departure was a blow for England who were already suffering from the decision of New Zealand skipper Tom Latham to bowl first in helpful conditions for the seamers. The home team took full advantage of movement in the air and on the pitch to leave England at 55-5 inside the first session. The batter was sent out to accompany Harry Brook and try to stabilize the England innings but his innings lasted only six balls. Jamieson bowled a ball on a length just outside off which looked like flying past the bat, so Jamie Smith had a go at leaving the ball and moved his bat out of the line of the delivery, the ball on landing seemed to move sharply off the seam, staying low and evading the batter's willow with no resistance before going on to hit off stump sending it back into the stumps for the batter to only see in hindsight. Jamie Smith was out for one off six balls and that was the second wicket for the tall New Zealand pace bowler of the innings, the delivery will show up some of the difficulties that batters struggled with from early on in the first day on a Lord's pitch which was doing enough for pace bowlers to enjoy a good first session. England Struggle Against New Zealand Pace Attack New Zealand's pacemen kept it on a string from the beginning. The debutant Emilio Gay was caught for eight by Jamieson, and then lbw was the decision taken after Ben Duckett was pinned in front by Nathan Smith for nineteen. William O'Rourke then claimed two wickets in two balls and from nowhere, Jacob Bethell and then Joe Root, was out for six and one respectively, in fact England are in all sorts of bother. When Smith was out Harry Brook was on 20 and Ben Stokes then came into bat. Two wickets to Jamieson and both Smith and O'Rourke claimed one wicket apiece as New Zealand's fast bowlers dominated proceedings in the first Test. The dismissal of Smith quickly became another talking point as the English batter paid the ultimate price for leaving one that moved a little bit too much and then the off stump went flying.
