Sri Lanka's sling bowler Nuwan Thushara delivered a brilliant spell of fast bowling during the Asia Cup 2025 match against Afghanistan at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. His highlight was in the third over of his spell when he delivered a jaffa to send Karim Janat back. Thushara Strikes Twice in One Over The drama commenced in the 3rd over when Thushara sent Rahmanullah Gurbaz packing off the first ball. Gurbaz, attempting to shake off his lean patch, went down the track and sought to loft across the line. But Thushara outsmarted him by taking the pace away, prompting an outside edge that flew to short third. Kusal Perera, stationed smartly by Charith Asalanka, pulled off a great catch. Gurbaz departed after scoring 14 off 8 balls. Only five balls after that, Thushara produced something special. Bowling to Karim Janat, he produced a good-length ball that came around off and middle before seaming away sharply. Janat, well-forward of the crease, could not get cover for the movement. The outswinger hit the off-stump as the Afghan batsman remained committed on the back foot. "Jaffa! What an over! Two wickets and just a single off the bat," the commentary went, epitomizing the excellence of Thushara's bowling. Janat could muster only 1 off 3 balls. In the 5th over, he struck once more, this time removing Sediqullah Atal. The left-handed batsman attempted to drive a fuller ball that came in late but left a huge gap between bat and pad. The ball crashed into the stumps, leaving Afghanistan in trouble. The 29-year-old bowler has been likened to Lasith Malinga many times for his sling-like action, and this spell reminded everyone why Sri Lanka highly value him. His classic capability of swinging the ball both ways rendered him unplayable in the initial overs. As Afghanistan struggled to bounce back, Thushara's aggressive spell provided Sri Lanka with the ideal beginning in a do-or-die encounter.
