The UAE cricket team created history on May 21, 2025, by defeating Bangladesh 2-1 in a three-match T20I series. Post the victory, a journalist interviewed UAE captain Muhammad Waseem on his celebration. The journalist said that Waseem lifted the trophy like Rohit Sharma did after India's T20 World Cup 2024 victory and questioned what he had to say about it. Responding to the reporter, Waseem said: "There’s not much to say about it. I first saw this kind of celebration from Lionel Messi." He further explained: "We’ve been celebrating like this for the last six trophies we’ve won. It has become a regular thing for us." Waseem also added with a smile: "Sometimes, the boys even push me to celebrate that way." While the home team lost the opening game by 27 runs, they bounced back strongly to win the subsequent two games and claim the series 2-1. In the second T20I in Sharjah, Bangladesh was asked to bat first, and the visitors scored 205 runs. UAE had little hope of chasing such a massive target, people thought. But the captain Muhammad Waseem had different plans. He played a match-winning innings, making 82 runs from 42 balls with nine fours and five sixes. His innings ensured UAE's victory and tie with the series. In the last game, Bangladesh was once again forced to bat first, and they scored 162 runs losing nine wickets. UAE, who were high on confidence from their previous win, remained calm and chased the target with five deliveries to spare. This series triumph was UAE's second-ever T20I series win against a full-member nation. Their first was in 2021, when they defeated Ireland 2-1. Muhammad Waseem, the skipper of UAE, ended the series as the highest run scorer. The right-handed opener scored 145 runs in 3 innings to help his side lift the trophy.
