The third India-England Test at Lord's was preceded by a tight and aggressive start. On a surface that provided some assistance to the bowlers, India captain Shubman Gill struck early, not with the bat or the ball, but through his mouth. In the first two sessions of Day 1, Gill was caught on the stump microphone making a dig at England's legendary "BazBall" strategy, one that is characterized by rapid and attacking cricket. When Joe Root and Ollie Pope played defensively following early losses, Gill sarcastically quipped, "No More entertaining cricket guys, welcome back to boring cricket." The remark was light-hearted but obviously directed at England's defensive cricket. Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj also mocked England's defensive approach during the dot ball streak. But immediately after the drinks interval, India struck quickly through all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was introduced as a surprise move. He bowled comfortably and got rid of both Duckett and Crawley in the same over, Crawley's edge falling into Pant's hands, and Duckett gloving a short ball. Joe Root and Ollie Pope then stabilized the innings with a slow but pragmatic partnership. They were at 83/2 at lunch from 25 overs. Root was not out on 24, and Pope was unbeaten on 12. In the second session, the duo played cautiously, with a defensive approach and guided their side to 153-2 at the end of 2nd session. At Tea, Joe Root is unbeaten at 54, while Ollie Pope is at 44. For India, second session went wicketless despite a controlled and disciplined bowling throughout the session. Although Akash Deep, who picked up 10 wickets in Edgbaston Test, proved to be expensive, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah made up the loss with their accurate fast bowling post Lunch.
