Bowling coach Morne Morkel bowled in India's practice session ahead of the important second Test against New Zealand, his first time bowling in nearly a year. In a video shared by BCCI, Morkel could be seen bowling in the nets while KL Rahul faced his deliveries. Morkel, an ex-fast bowler who came into the Indian coaching staff before this series against Bangladesh, was cautious about his body and never bowled without keeping "injury prevention" in mind. He had no batting contribution, scoring a duck in the first innings and 12 runs in the second. His place in the team was already precarious, more so because Sarfaraz Khan came good in the last match while Shubman Gill is expected to return for the Pune Test, which commences on October 24. Ten Doeschate said: "Gauti [Gautam Gambhir] is keen to give him a long rope, just like Sanju [Samson]. There's certainly no concerns about KL. He's batting nicely and in a good mental space. However, we do face a tough decision ahead of this Test. There are seven pieces, but only six spots available." He added: "Rishabh's doing pretty well. Rohit [Sharma] mentioned it the other day-he's experiencing some discomfort at the end range of movement in his knee, but fingers crossed, he'll be fit to keep in this Test as well." On the second day of the first Test, a knee injury was suffered by Rishabh Pant while trying to stump Devon Conway. He retired from the field and was replaced as the wicket-keeper for the rest of the first innings and 27.4 overs of New Zealand's second innings by Dhruv Jurel.
