Afghanistan's veteran all-rounder Mohammad Nabi gave one of the most thrilling finishes in T20I cricket, smashing five sixes from the last over vs Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi. His pyrotechnics took Afghanistan from a desperate position to a fighting score of 168 in their do-or-die Asia Cup 2025 match. When Afghanistan fell to 79/6, Sri Lanka were poised to take charge. Left-arm seamer Nuwan Thushara had torn the top order apart with three successive wickets in the powerplay. The middle order could not resist and left Afghanistan in a precarious situation. But the counterattack was about to begin. Rashid Khan began turning things around with some crisp shots, and Nabi bided his time. Mohammad Nabi's Final Over Carnage That opportunity arose in the final over. As Dunith Wellalage came in to bowl, Nabi let loose one that altered the atmosphere of the innings. He began with a full-strength hit down the ground, followed by a massive hit over mid-wicket. On the next ball, Nabi got long-on in a jiffy. Wellalage attempted to push the next delivery wider, but the umpire had declared it a no-ball. On the free-hit, Nabi lofted the ball straight over long-off once again for another maximum. The crowd erupted as he raised his fifty in 20 balls. The frustration of the bowler was evident, but Nabi was not finished. He smashed one more into the stands, leaving Sri Lanka in shock. In the last delivery, he was looking for a desperate double but was run out, scoring a single to end on 60 from just 22 balls. The Afghan dugout stood in applause, knowing how vital this knock was. Afghanistan smashed 49 runs in the last two overs, with 32 alone coming from Nabi’s bat in the final six balls. Nabi Hammered Joint-Fastest Fifty for Afghanistan in T20Is This innings also placed Nabi in the record books. His 20-ball fifty is now the joint-fastest for Afghanistan in T20Is, matching Azmatullah Omarzai’s effort against Hong Kong earlier in the tournament. Only Gulbadin Naib (21 balls vs India, 2024) and Nabi himself (21 balls vs Ireland, 2017) come close. Sri Lanka had done all the hard work to stay on top for 18 overs, but Nabi’s late fireworks turned the match into a thrilling contest. Afghanistan’s bowlers now carry the task of defending 168 in what could be a season-defining clash.
