The Edgbaston crowd erupted in a frenzy as Joe Root at last provided England with a breakthrough on Day 2 of the second Test against India. It happened in the 139th over when Root bowled an astute delivery which beat Washington Sundar's defense and struck the middle stump. Sundar had played well for his 42 runs from 103 balls, with 3 fours and a six. He had been in solid form, but this ball from Root was different. It was slightly faster and on a good length. Sundar had hoped that it would straight on, but it remained in line, or perhaps even turned a bit, and went through the gap to strike the stumps. Sundar was shocked and did not know what happened wrong. In the meantime, the crowd shouted "Rooooooottttt" while the former England skipper celebrated the crucial wicket by punching the air. This wicket was England's first of the session and brought them some relief after a difficult day on the field. At one point, India were 211 for 5 and it seemed like they would struggle to get to even 450. But then came Gill's heroics. He scored one of the greatest knocks by an Indian batter in England, scoring 269 runs and taking India to close to 600. Gill seemed likely to go even bigger and was targeting a triple century when he headed into the tea break. But a labored-looked shot against Josh Tongue ended his innings. Nevertheless, his knock had already served its purpose. It handed India a huge initiative and put England on the back foot. One of India's positives in this innings was the manner in which the lower middle order performed. In the previous game, they didn't last long enough, but here they fought hard and were at the crease. They did a lot of hard work and scored vital runs that took India closer to the 600 mark. This will instill more confidence in the Indian team in the future. The English bowlers appeared exhausted after bowling for two long days. They worked as hard as they could but were unable to cut off India's run flow. As they left the field, their faces indicated how hard they had worked and how difficult it had been for them. Now, everyone will be watching how England react with the bat. They need a large total to chase and plenty of pressure to cope with. The question of the day is whether India can get early wickets and put the pressure on in the final few overs of the day, or whether England's go-for-broke approach of play, termed Bazball, can once again get them back into the game.
