The Sydney Thunder made their way into the final after beating the Sydney Sixers in the Challenger of the Big Bash League 2024-25 at Sydney Cricket Ground. The game had many ups and down but one moment that sparked the controversy was the run-out of Matthew Gilkes. Gilkes, who was batting at 26, nudged the fourth delivery of the ninth over by Jack Edwards, towards the third-man region to steal a quick single. They decided to get back for a double, but Hayden Kerr, who collected the ball at the third man, threw it towards the stumps to find Gilkes well short of the crease. Edwards, who was standing over the wickets to collect the ball and dislodge the bails made a blunder here. A couple of fingers of his hands were in the contact of the stumps when a direct throw from Kerr landed into his hands to lighten up the Zing bails. This raised a question on whether Gilkes is actually out or it's a blunder from Edwards that would give Gilkes a lifeline. The third umpire took a few minutes and looked it from multiple angles before adjudging Gilkes as out. Watch the video here: Big call, that.
