Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana claimed an ODI hat-trick to become the 7th Sri Lankan bowler to achieve this feat. He bagged a hat-trick in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand at Seddon Park, Hamilton on 8th January 2025. The skipper of New Zealand, Mitchell Santner, all-rounder Nathan Smith and Matt Henry fell as a victim of Theekshana's spin. On the fifth ball of the 35th over, Theekshana bowls short at wide of off and Santner gets it off the toe end of his bat while trying to smash it on the offside. Wickramasinghe, who was positioned at the sweeper cover, ran towards his right to complete the catch. On the last delivery of the same over, Theekshana scalped the wicket of Nathan Smith on a fuller deliver outside off. Smith edged the shot which resulted into a catch for Kamindu at sweeper cover. The Lankan spinner came again with the ball in 37th over and on the very first ball of the over, Theekshana gets Henry to claim a hat-trick. He bowls fuller delivery outside off to which Henry slogs it. However, the ball gets the height instead of distance and Fernando, the substitute fielder, makes no mistake to catch the ball.
