A strange incident occurred in the 2024 County Championship match between Somerset and Hampshire on September 26. The incident occurred at the end of Somerset's first innings when South African fast bowler Kyle Abbott was bowling to Somerset batsman Shoaib Bashir. On the first ball, Abbott bowled a good-length ball that removed the middle stump, but Bashir survived fortunately because of a strange incident- Abbott's hand towel slipped out of his pant and fell into the non-striker's end which was considered as a distraction by the umpire, who declared it as a no-ball and Bashir was saved from losing his wicket. The official Instagram account for the County Championship released the video that captured the moment. "Ever seen this happen before?" it read. The footage catches how everything's been perfect about Abbott's over, but when the towel comes down, Bashir points that way to the umpire. The umpire must've picked this distraction and called it a no-ball. The commentators were nodding in agreement that it is indeed a no-ball by mentioning, "His towel has fallen out of his back pocket, which means it's a no-ball. And would you believe it? Kyle Abbott would have been on a hattrick." On the second-to-last ball of the 54th over, Abbott struck again, this time dismissing Shoaib Bashir for an lbw, ending Somerset's first innings at 136 runs. At the end of Day 1, Hampshire began their chase and scored 62 runs but lost five wickets as well. The match continues as Hampshire gets bowled out for 196 at Tea on Day 2.
