Day 1 of the fourth Test at Manchester was divided between England and India. India made 78 runs during the first session without losing a single wicket, setting a 10-year record for an overseas opening duo remaining on the field throughout the entire first session. But England fought back in the second session, claiming three wickets in a hurry and bringing India down to 149 for 3 by Tea. The English pacers, particularly, had excellent control of the ball. In this session, Jaiswal was taken aback by the swing that Carse created. In the 33rd over, Carse bowled the fourth ball, which moved away from Yashasvi Jaiswal and continued until it was cleanly collected by the wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. The moment the ball was caught, Jaiswal appeared clearly surprised at the movement. He was also heard on the stump mic, saying, "Esa lag raha hai bana rahe hai ball bhai, achanak aise kaise swing hone lag gaya? Kya laga rahe hai ball pe ye log?" (It seems like they're making the ball, brother. How did it suddenly start to swing like this? What are these people applying to the ball?) Rishabh Pant, who had been batting confidently, injured his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep of a sharp yorker by Chris Woakes. The ball struck his right foot squarely and ripped the muscle. This compelled Pant to withdraw from the field, and the injury is severe enough that he will be out for the remainder of the series. Sai Sudharsan, who made his first Test fifty batting at number 3, fell to Ben Stokes in the last session as well, making things worse for India. On Day 2, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja will start on a positive note. They will try to remain at the crease and form a solid partnership to assist India in reaching a good total in the first innings. England, however, will try to get them out early, as they will have the new ball to bowl at the beginning of the day at Old Trafford.
