The morning session of the opening Test between India and the West Indies in Ahmedabad was entirely of the hosts' making, with the bowling department picking up five wickets before lunch. The highlight of the day came minutes before the break when star spinner Kuldeep Yadav delivered a dream ball to castle Shai Hope. The game started as West Indies captain Roston Chase decided to bat first after the toss. Jasprit Bumrah set the tone by getting John Campbell trapped in a brilliant piece of work with a sharp DRS call, as Mohammed Siraj tore through the top order with a stunning spell. Tagenarine Chanderpaul edged one down leg for a duck, Brandon King mistimed a ball which crashed into his stumps, and young Alick Athanaze was lured into a loose drive. Back in the Test XI after over a year, Kuldeep took just under two overs to leave his stamp. He threw it up outside off with the ball holding its line, dropped sharply, and then snapped back in between bat and pad. Hope, searching for a booming drive, was comprehensively defeated as the ball smashed into the top of the off-stump. The right-hand batter stood in shock as he gazed at his stumps. Chase, however, is 22 not out and will be partnered by Justin Greaves in the middle. The two will need to find a way to deal with India's attack.
