The opening match of IPL 2025 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens has been filled with turns and twists. Upon winning the toss, RCB decided to bowl first in order to put early pressure on KKR. Their strategy paid off initially as Quinton de Kock was sent back cheaply, but Ajinkya Rahane and Sunil Narine put on a good partnership to revive KKR. But the visitors made a comeback, and it was Krunal Pandya who turned the match around with his smart bowling. Seeing his chance, he thought of probing Iyer with a vicious bouncer. The ball, however, was too high and was deemed a wide by the umpire, who also requested that Iyer wear his helmet. On the very next delivery, Pandya bowled a faster, fuller one, and Iyer totally misjudged it, and his stumps were shattered. The KKR vice-captain, who was purchased for a whopping ₹23.75 crore, had a forgettable session as he could muster only six runs off seven deliveries before returning to the pavilion. Previously, he had already sent packing KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a decent knock of 56 runs. Subsequently, he sent back Rinku Singh for 12, wrapping up his four overs with stellar figures of 3/29. Later in the innings, Suyash Sharma, Yash Dayal and Josh Hazlewood also joined the party, reducing Kolkata Knight Riders to 174-8 at the end of the first innings. The total seems to below par and hence, the KKR bowlers will need to bowl extraordinarily to restrict the power-packer batting line-up from chasing the target.
