The first Test between India and South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata began with an eventful first session and a funny moment between Jasprit Bumrah and Temba Bavuma. On Day 1, in the 13th over, Bumrah suddenly said something that was picked up by the stump mic and went viral in no time. The incident happened when India appealed for an LBW against Bavuma. The ball hit Bavuma on the pads when he had faced just five balls. The on-field umpire gave him not out, and the Indian players huddled to decide whether they should take the DRS. While referring to the height angle, which was pivotal in the LBW calls, Bumrah asked his mates to consider the short height of Bavuma. He used the Hindi word “bauna”, which means dwarf. This made Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant laugh. Soon after, the clip went viral and became one of the most talked-about moments of the morning session. South Africa made 105 runs before lunch after opting to bat first, but India also managed to pick up three vital wickets to keep themselves in control. The visitors got off to a good start, scoring at over five runs an over as their openers put on 57 runs for the first wicket. Mohammed Siraj struggled to find rhythm, which allowed South Africa to score freely early on. However, Jasprit Bumrah turned things around with a long and sharp opening spell. He broke through by knocking back Ryan Ricketon’s off stump, ending his solid start. Just one ball later, he produced a quick delivery which Aiden Markram edged to the keeper for another wicket. That is when Kuldeep Yadav joined the action, removing Temba Bavuma as South Africa slipped from 57/0 to 71/3. A stand was then stitched between Tony de Zorzi and Wiaan Mulder, who righted the innings. They were tested often but still managed to keep the scoreboard moving. India were strong with the ball as play moved past lunch, but South Africa hoped their middle order would hold firm to build a big score at Eden Gardens.
