Shubman Gill's occupation of the crease lasted only till England's plan finally came to fruition. Chris Woakes, with the wicketkeeper Jamie Smith standing up to the stumps, set off a 130kph uneven seam ball just outside off. Gill, being compelled to remain in the crease, pushed to defend but could muster only a faint nick. Smith caught it cleanly and straight away greeted his mates with a celebration, aware that they had followed their plan to the letter. In all, 22 overs have been lost over two days despite the application of the extra half-hour. The match referee is likely to take this slow over-rate into consideration. India lost two important wickets during the last session of the day. Karun Nair appeared in good nick, scoring 40 off 62 balls, but could not turn his start once more. Joe Root made a spectacular diving catch to send him back. Shubman Gill, who had been playing in excellent touch, had a rare off day with the bat. He edged one off Woakes to the keeper for a mere 16. The pitch provided variable bounce during the day, keeping both sides puzzled. Jofra Archer made an impressive comeback to Test cricket with pace and rhythm. Brydon Carse, despite not taking any wickets, played a huge role by making a crucial fifty in the morning session. Woakes, who had not done much with the ball until then, removed the Indian skipper, an important wicket. The match is going slowly in comparison to the first two Tests, but the pitch is livelier than Day 1. India will look for KL Rahul to deliver again at this ground.
