The victory made India the most successful team in Champions Trophy history. India lost the toss for the 15th time in a row in this format as New Zealand positioned themselves. Rachin Ravindra benefited from his luck and hit a few boundaries during the powerplay. India thoough, noticed the back of his head before he could do too much though he was dropped twice. The wicket gave India's spinners the opening they needed to find their way in and they didn't fail to utilize it. Daryl Mitchell (63 off 101) appeared largely cumbersome at the crease, and so did the majority of the remaining New Zealand players. Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 40) picked the big wickets of Rachin Ravindra and Kane Williamson to enable Varun Chakravarthy (2 for 45), Axar Patel (0 for 29) and Ravindra Jadeja (1 for 30) to impose a stranglehold that more or less killed the game in the middle over. Michael Bracewell (53* off 40) provided the Kiwis with the proper push in the death overs to cross 250. After fighting throughout the tournament, Rohit Sharma (76 off 83) finally got his mojo going by striking boundary after boundary in the powerplay as Shubman Gill was content playing second fiddle. New Zealand's spinners entered the fray in the middle overs and made it tough for the Indian batsmen. Mitchell Santner (2 for 46) gave the initial breakthrough courtesy another superhuman grab by Glenn Phillips to dispose of Shubman Gill and Michael Bracewell (2 for 28) disposed of Virat Kohli. Rachin Ravindra (1 for 47) disposed of Rohit Sharma, but Shreyas Iyer (48 off 62) and Axar Patel kept the ship afloat. Despite the rising asking rate, India ensured that there was no loss of wickets which would jeopardize the chase. KL Rahul then walked India to the chase in the last but one over as serenely as he had done in the semifinal.
