Gautam Gambhir along with the Indian team management has once again come into the question for not including Sanju Samson in India's T20I playing XI. The fans and experts pointed out how Samson has been in better T20I form, while an opener Shubman Gill continues to be backed despite a long run of low scores. Gill struggled once again for a right fit in the second T20I against South Africa in New Chandigarh. After failing in the first match at Cuttack, Gill was dismissed for his first-ever golden duck in international cricket. Lungi Ngidi bowled a good-length delivery, which moved away and was edged by Gill to Reeza Hendricks behind the stumps. Immediately after the wicket, broadcasters flashed the comparison between Samson and Gill as T20I openers over the 2024 T20 World Cup. Samson was ahead in the numbers. The camera panned to the Indian dugout - Samson sat quietly. Gambhir, who sat next to him, did look visibly miffed, which the fans were quick to pick up on social media. The visitors, who were outplayed in the first match, proved to be a different side in New Chandigarh. Quinton de Kock led the way with a robust 90 and got good support from the rest of the batting order to take South Africa to 213. India’s chase started on the wrong end as Gill fell in the very first over. Abhishek Sharma did look sharp, though he fell to Marco Jansen. Suryakumar Yadav fell early again, adding more pressure on himself as he searches for form. Axar Patel was sent up the order at No. 3 but never looked in comfort. Even Hardik Pandya - India's hero from the last game - could not get going. For Mumbai, the only one showing fight was Tilak Varma, who scored 62 off 34 balls, which was not enough. South Africa came back well by bowling in good disciplines and never really gave any momentum to India. Ottniel Baartman was the star bowler with 4/24, picking key wickets at the death to seal the win. India now trail 1-1 in the series, with the debate over the opening spot only getting stronger.
