The rivalry between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has reached a new height after Royal Challengers Bengaluru eliminated CSK from IPL 2024 by defeating them at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Since that game, the fan war between the supporters of these two teams has seen multiple aspects. Ahead of the RCB vs CSK clash in Bengaluru on Saturday, street vendors and people in Bengaluru were seen selling jerseys with jail imprinted on them along with the years 2016-17. This indicates the years in which Chennai Super Kings was serving the ban handed to them after the 2015 season. To mock the CSK fans, people in Bengaluru have been seen selling such jerseys outside the stadium. A video of the same has gone viral on social media and it has created a huge buzz on the internet. The controversy started during the 2013 IPL season when CSK’s Team Principal, Gurunath Meiyappan, was caught for betting and sharing inside team details with bookies. He was the son-in-law of then-BCCI President N. Srinivasan. Just before the final match between CSK and Mumbai Indians, Meiyappan was arrested. Around the same time, Rajasthan Royals’ co-owner Raj Kundra was also found involved in betting. Though match-fixing was a concern that season, Meiyappan was only found guilty of betting. In 2015, the Supreme Court appointed the Lodha Committee to investigate. After its findings, both Meiyappan and Kundra were banned for life from all BCCI-related activities. The committee also recommended a two-year ban for CSK and RR (2016 and 2017 seasons). However, Chennai Super Kings made a strong comeback in 2018. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, CSK went on to lift the IPL title for the third time that year. They later won the trophy twice (2021 and 2023) under MS Dhoni, being the joint-most successful franchise along with Mumbai Indians.
