Sri Lanka's opener Dimuth Karunaratne received a warm ovation from the Australian players as walked off the field after being dismissed in his final Test innings of his career. The incident occurred during the second Test when Karunaratne was dismissed for 14 runs off 28 balls by Matthew Kuhnemann after being caught behind by Alex Carey. A review brought dismissal confirmation on a clear edge from UltraEdge that marked an end to Karunaratne's final Test innings. While his way back to the dressing room, the Australian spinner, Nathan Lyon congratulated him. Dinesh Chandimal also went to him gave him a proper hug and all Australian cricketers responded with an appreciation in claps to him regarding his services to Sri Lanka in the Test cricket. Karunaratne raised his bat in appreciation and stood up in front of the crowd who were honoring him. The moment was fitting for a player who has been a stalwart of Sri Lanka's batting line-up for many years. Prabath Jayasuriya bowled well for Sri Lanka, scalping five wickets in 38 overs. Nishan Peiris also picked up three wickets, Ramesh Mendis had one. Australia ended their innings with a lead of 157 runs. Sri Lanka did not have a promising start to their second innings, as the hosts lost their first wicket of Pathum Nissanka in the second over itself. Karunaratne, who was playing his 100th Test, also his last, as the 36-year-old had announced his retirement from Test cricket prior to the start of the second Test, paired up with Chandimal to add 24 runs before losing his wicket to Kuhnemann. Chandimal also fell for 12 runs which was followed by the wicket of Kamindu Mendis in the 26th over. At Tea, Sri Lanka was at 98/4, trailing by 59 runs. The hosts will aim for a comeback from Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva in the final session of the third Day.
