In the 10th over of the game between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades in Big Bash League 2024, Cooper Connolly, the Perth Scorchers' batter smashed the ball by Richardson onto the Roof of the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne. Perth Scorchers were batting first, and they had a dismal start as they lost four wickets for just 35 runs. Connolly, who has been great so far in this season for the Scorchers was batting with Matthew Spoors after they were four down. In the 10th over by Richardson, Connolly went for a slog through on-side but ended up playing it too early and the ball straight away went up high in the air to hit the roof. As per the rule, if the ball hits the roof and if the fielder catches it with one hand, the batter will be given out. Richardson, who attempted for a catch with one-hand, not only dropped the catch, but also injured his hand and was treated by the physio. The umpires declared the delivery as a dead ball. However, the authority to decide the fate of the delivery is now handed to the umpires. The rule of giving a six to the ball that hits the roof was scraped in BBL 2023 after a few concerns. It used to spoil the catch dismissal for the fielding side and that would go against the bowling team as they would not only miss the chance of scalping wicket but would also end up giving six runs which can decide the fate of the game. Coming to the match, Scorchers, despite an ugly start, managed to post a respectable total of 143 on the board, thanks to Cooper Connolly's 66 along with a gutsy knock of 29 by Matthew Spoors. The onus is now on the bowlers of Perth Scorchers to restrict the Renegades from chasing the target.
