In the second Test match between England and India at Edgbaston, Birmingham, Chris Woakes once again struck to claim India's fifth wicket with a beauty. He delivered a good-length ball that pitched outside off and came back in off the seam sharply. Nitish Reddy underread the movement and decided against playing a shot, expecting it to go through. But the ball came back sharply and removed the off stump. Reddy did not stand a chance to recover, with his arms up in the air to depart. It was a clever bit of bowling from Woakes, who got the batter just right. After being asked to bat first, India were in early trouble but recouped well thanks to a brilliant century by Shubman Gill. England started the day in fiery style with Chris Woakes firing down a sizzling opening spell. He conceded just four maidens in his first five overs and removed the settled KL Rahul. His control and swing set the tone for England. But Jaiswal and Karun Nair launched a fightback, striking regular boundaries and taking pressure off India. Towards the fag end of lunch, Brydon Carse dismissed Karun Nair with a nicely placed short ball, having England that fraction of an edge going into the interval. He formed a crucial 66-run stand with skipper Shubman Gill for the third wicket. But once he had batted hardly any balls over a short space of time, Jaiswal lost concentration and was dismissed for 87, edged a loose ball played by Stokes to the keeper. Rishabh Pant and Gill subsequently restored another crucial stand. Pant tried taking on off-spinner Shoaib Bashir but was caught at long-on for 25. Soon after, Nitish Reddy was bowled by Woakes after shoulder-arming an approaching ball. With India in a tricky spot, Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill showed the mettle. Gill, in particular, was in classic style, playing good cricket and employing his feet wonderfully. He brought up his 7th Test century and became the first Indian to register two hundreds on Day 1 of a Test match in England. India finished the day in excess of the 300-run mark, setting the stage for an interesting second day.
