In a key instance towards the end of the fourth Test's second session, Ben Stokes took the key wicket of Indian skipper Shubman Gill with a perfectly executed ball. Gill completely misjudged the ball and decided to leave it as it turned in hard. Regrettably for him, the ball hit the front pad in line with the stumps. The appeal on the field was vociferous and persuasive, and the umpire gave it eventually after a short interval. Gill chose to review, but the result was upheld as ball tracking indicated that it was hitting the off stump fairly cleanly. The wicket brought out Stokes' clever deployment of angles and movement, disrupting a crucial partnership right at the tea break. KL Rahul, who seemed to be in solid form in his stay at the crease, was finally caught by Chris Woakes off an edge to the slip cordon. Woakes had been creating pressure and got the reward he merited in the end. While Jaiswal received a fortunate reprieve early in the spell of Dawson when an edge sailed past the fielder he did not last long. In the next over of Dawson, he was able to get rid of Jaiswal with a alert catch in the slips. Shubman Gill, under pressure and out of sync, misread a straight delivery and was caught LBW by Ben Stokes in a moment that encapsulated his struggling performance. Stokes went on to bowl with maximum intensity and nearly got rid of Sai Sudharsan too, but Jamie Smith behind the wickets dropped the catch, giving the batter a lifeline. Sai, despite being tested, held his ground and was subsequently joined by Rishabh Pant, who was given a resounding welcome by the public.
