Ravi Ashwin, who is famous for his astute cricketing brain, was in the middle of a controversy in the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 match between Dindigul Dragons and IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. The controversy happened at the SNR College Cricket Ground in Coimbatore, in the 5th match of the league. Ashwin, playing for the Tiruppur Tamizhans, was batting impressively and had already scored 18 off 11 balls. But in the 4.5 over of the innings, there was a dramatic twist. Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore delivered one that drifted in as Ashwin tried to play a sweep shot. He completely missed the ball, and the bowler appealed. The umpire raised his finger almost immediately, giving Ashwin out lbw. But replays clearly indicated that the ball had pitched outside the leg stump — which would have made an lbw unlikely. Ashwin was visibly upset with the call and expressed his displeasure by walking off the field. The incident soon went viral, and fans and experts debated whether umpiring quality was a concern and if DRS was needed or if officiating could be improved, even in domestic leagues such as the TNPL.
