The Hundred Women's Competition 2025 delivered another nail-biting contest as Trent Rockets overcame Birmingham Phoenix by three wickets, owing to some fielding magic by Ashleigh Gardner that turned the game upside down at Trent Bridge. With Phoenix poised for a late charge, the breakthrough came on the 84th ball of their innings. Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner, herself already famous for her power hitting and astute cricketing mind, demonstrated her world-class fielding. From her own bowling, she scooped onto the ball and lobbed a flat, laser-like throw to catch Marie Kelly short of her mark. The direct hit heightened the Rockets' tempo and halted Phoenix's momentum at a vital juncture. Kelly (14 off 15) was emerging as an important middle-order Phoenix batter, who was looking to quicken the pace after settling the innings. Her ouster broke their rhythm and exposed the lower order. Although Emma Lamb remained solid with a gritty 56 not out to take Phoenix to 123/6, Kelly's run-out created a stark void in their score. With wickets falling all around her, Sciver-Brunt made a controlled 52, rotating the strike intelligently and coming up with boundaries as required. Her coolness guided the chase, and although the Rockets faltered late in the game, they managed to scrounge through to 126/7, securing the win with three balls left to spare. Earlier, young spinner Emily Gordon impressed for Rockets with 2/24 as she put pressure in the middle overs. For Phoenix, Emma Lamb's solitary hand impressed, her undefeated batting provided resilience in the face of crumbling partnerships. The Trent Bridge meltdown was the ideal reminder why The Hundred still captivates spectators with its high-octane drama and non-predictive finishes. Whilst Emma Lamb's individual battle kept the Birmingham Phoenix afloat, it was Ashleigh Gardner's brilliance in the field and Nat Sciver-Brunt's coolness with the bat that paid dividends for the Rockets. In a battle that see-sawed on thin margins, Trent Rockets demonstrated just enough grit to go past their rivals, reinforcing yet again that in this format, every single ball really matters.
