Akash Deep created a gem of a moment on Day 4 of the second Test at Edgbaston as he dismissed Ben Duckett for the second time in the game with a magic in-nipper. The ball, which began on a back of a length outside off, jagged back sharply into the left-hander. Duckett, playing outside his crease, tried to push with a slanted bat but could only muster a thick inside edge that smashed into his middle stump. The blow was so strong that the stump needed to be replaced. It was a top-class ball from Akash Deep, and the Indian team exploded in jubilation. The tourists produced overwhelming performances in all departments, first fueled by Shubman Gill's record-breaking batting and pacers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj taking early scalps in England's second innings. Ben Stokes fumes at umpire after Jaiswal's offer granted India's tally was based on the performance of captain Gill, who came up with a 269 in the first innings and then added a 161 off a mere 162 balls in the second innings. Gill was the first Indian to make more than 400 runs in a single Test, and only the second Indian cricketer in history to make a double hundred and a hundred in a single match, after Sunil Gavaskar. Once KL Rahul (55) and Karun Nair (26) provided India with a good beginning on Day 4, Gill picked up the pace after lunch. He added 110 runs with Rishabh Pant, who smoked 65 off 58 balls in a breezy knock. Gill scored his century before tea and continued to batter on with Ravindra Jadeja, who scored 69* off 118 balls. The skipper's knock took India's second-innings score to 427/6 declared, leaving England with a record target of 608. The home team's top order again crumbled under pressure. Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley in the second over. Shortly afterwards, Akash Deep, who was sparkling in the first innings with four scalps, shook off Ben Duckett and then came back to end the career of Joe Root. England was at 72/3 in 16 overs during stumps, still requiring 536 runs to win. Ollie Pope (24)* and Harry Brook (15)* will resume batting on the last day of the Test match.
