Akash Deep shmashed his first Test fifty in fashion, and the way he celebrated attested to just how much it meant to him. Against a length ball from Gus Atkinson, he swung strongly across the line, and though it was off the inner half, the ball sped away to the square leg boundary. As the shot rushed towards the ropes, Akash Deep raised his fist in ecstasy, pointed to the Indian crest on his chest with pride, and raised his bat. The dressing room was overjoyed, with Ravindra Jadeja asking him to take off his helmet, but Akash was content basking in the moment. Even Gautam Gambhir, ever the serious one, couldn't help but smile. Like Mishra, he scored it versus England at The Oval. Nightwatchmen are traditionally brought in to save the principal batters, but Akash did that and more. He remained rocklike, played sensible cricket, and ensured India didn't lose wickets in a hurry. His fightful knock reminded everyone that he can deliver under pressure. It also reminded one of Mishra's 84-run innings at the same venue. This half-century will definitely be a moment of pride in Akash Deep's nascent Test career. A Fighting Knock Comes to an End Akash Deep's inspiring knock came to an end, but not before he gave England lots to consider. Jamie Overton bowled a short ball that climbed sharply on middle and leg. Akash attempted to work it on the leg side but received a leading edge. The ball went high and towards point, where Atkinson rushed in and took a sharp catch. As Akash returned, the crowd showered him with a standing ovation for his try. It was a courageous innings that contributed useful runs to India. His teammates ensured to reward him with pats and smiles.
