Earlier it was Delhi Capitals, his first-ever franchise, whom he led twice, including a final in 2020. Thereafter he won the trophy for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, and now he took Punjab to the playoff after 2014! Notably, citing the overcast situation in Ahmedabad, Punjab decided to bowl. He also brought in Yuzvendra Chahal, who missed a few matches due to a niggle on his wrist. Even the Mumbai Indians, too, replaced Richard Gleeson with Reece Topley. Gleeson suffered from a hamstring pull in the final over of the eliminator match against Gujarat Titans. Originally scheduled to be held in Kolkata, the venue was later shifted to Ahmedabad by the BCCI due to weather concerns following the tournament’s suspension amid the India-Pakistan war. Ironically, while Kolkata currently enjoys clear skies, Ahmedabad is experiencing heavy showers, delaying the match significantly. With no reserve day allocated, if rain continues to interrupt and the match is abandoned, Punjab Kings—having finished higher on the points table—will advance to the final against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Fans are furious with the BCCI’s decision, especially since Kolkata and Hyderabad reportedly had better weather and drainage facilities. Social media is flooded with criticism, questioning the board’s weather logic and accusing it of favoritism. If the rain doesn’t stop soon, Punjab might just walk into the final without bowling a single ball in Qualifier 2. However, for a 20-over-a-side match, the match must resume by 9:40 pm. Presently, the rain has stopped, but the wet outfield is causing the delay.
