Even though he retired in 2018, he still has the record of the fastest ODI century, 100 off 31 balls. Mr. 360 himself announced his return through his twitter post in which he said that he will be participating in the WCL 2025 and will captain the South Africa Champions for the second edition of the tournament. When asked about the reason behind his return, de Villiers said that during a garden game with his kids, he felt as if there some cricket left in him and hence, he thought of making a return to professional cricket. However, he has denied the rumors of him coming out of the retirement and playing for his national side or IPL.
