AB de Villiers' long-awaited comeback to the game didn't quite go as expected for fans. Representing South Africa Champions at World Championship of Legends 2025, AB was caught off just 3 runs in their match against West Indies Champions at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Attempting to hit over the covers, he missed the timing of the shot and got caught without getting the necessary elevation. It was a brief crease stay for the legendary batsman, leaving the fans disappointed. The match played at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on July 19 was nothing but full of drama, rain delays, and an old-fashioned conclusion which took the audience down the memory lane. Rain was a spoilsports from the start, delaying the commencement for several hours and truncating the match to 11 overs a side. The West Indies Champions had to bat first and, through a gritty effort, managed to post a hard-earned 79 runs. Lendl Simmons led the run tally with 28, supplemented by 27 by Chadwick Walton. Aaron Phangiso was South Africa's best bowler, claiming two wickets for a paltry 12 runs for his two overs. Chasing 80, South African Champions had a calamitous start, losing AB de Villiers and Richard Levi for a paltry 8 runs. Sheldon Cottrell claimed both the wickets and set Edgbaston on fire with his signature salute dance. But Sarel Erwee and JP Duminy did some brilliant hitting to get South Africa back in the match. With 2 runs needed from the remaining three balls, the Proteas fell short of reaching the line, and the match resulted in a heart-stopping tie. In a twist of fate, instead of a Super Over, the game was decided by a bowl-out not employed in international cricket for many years. The moment created a wave of nostalgia on the grounds and mesmerized spectators with an uncommon but thrilling ending.
