South Africa Champions registered a nail-biting victory against Australia Champions in the second semi-final of World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. With 3 runs required off the final ball, 41-year-old AB de Villiers exhibited his magic on the field to run out Nathan Coulter-Nile and ensure a narrow victory for his team. Australia Champions were chasing a target of 187 runs and required 14 runs in the last over. Rob Quiney and Coulter-Nile were in the center. They scored 11 runs in the initial five balls. But a single off the fifth ball after that, Quiney retired hurt. Dan Christian replaced him to face the final ball with 3 runs to win. He struck the ball straight down the ground and quickly ran for double, but AB de Villiers, who was stationed at long-on, ran towards the ball, held it and with a straight hit and coordination with Wayne Parnell, got Coulter-Nile run out. Morne van Wyk made a good 76, while JJ Smuts contributed 57 runs. AB de Villiers, who had made 61*, 116*, and 123 in the previous three games, managed only 6 runs here. Peter Siddle was Australia Champions' top bowler with 4 wickets for only 30 runs. In response, Australia had a good beginning with 58 in the powerplay at the loss of one wicket. However post powerplay, SA Champions scalped wickets at regular intervals and did not allow the Aussie batters to settle down. Shaun Marsh (25), Chris Lynn (35), D'Arcy Short (33), and Dan Christian (49*) all contributed well. However, the South African bowlers kept winning the crucial moments. Wayne Parnell took two important wickets and kept his cool in the last over. AB de Villiers, who failed with the bat this time, showed why he remains a match-winner, through his stunning fielding. South Africa Champions now will play Pakistan Champions in the final on August 2, 2025.
