Virat Kohli, the name that had redefined Test cricket in India, the youth icon and a modern-day legend, had shocked the cricketing fraternity by announcing his retirement from the format on May 12 with an emotional post on his official Instagram account. Following that, in an interview with Star Sports, Delhi Ranji Coach Sarandeep Singh made claims that he has a conversation with Kohli about his future plans ahead of the Test series in England. Singh revealed that Kohli was eyeing taking part in the India A series before getting back to Tests. Not only that, he was hoping to hit centuries as he did in the 2018 England tour. Singh said, "I spoke to Virat a few weeks ago and asked if he'd play county cricket to prepare for the England series. He said, 'I'll play 2 India A matches in England,' and added, 'I want to hit 4–5 centuries in the England series, like I did in 2018 when he came to the play the Ranji match'." When there were rumors that said he was asked for a u-turn from his retirement plans, a few revealed that the Indian management was looking for a new bunch of faces for the next World Test Championship Cycle. With Singh mentioning such "plans," it has added more confusion regarding Kohli's Test retirement. Rohit Sharma's retirement announcement came on 7th May, and Kohli followed the same path within a week. Notably, they had already bid adieu to T20 Internationals right after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup in Barbados, along with Ravindra Jadeja. In such a scenario, Rohit and Virat are only available for the One Day Internationals, a format that itself is not available. Well, India will play the Indian Premier League and will then straightaway switch to Tests. A format that was not so welcomed and loved for so long will now be the most welcomed just to see the duo back, and India will likely to play the format in August against Bangladesh.
