Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter AB de Villiers feels that there might be a backstory behind Rahul Dravid quitting coaching in Rajasthan Royals just after one season. Notably, reports suggested that Dravid was offered a broader role, which he denied, leading to the departure. However, AB de Villiers felt that Dravid might have been kicked out. Dravid ended his stint with India after winning the 2024 T20 Men's World Cup at Barbados. Draid was expected to continue so for Rajasthan Royals, but the Sanju Samson-led team couldn't capitalize. Comparing his role with that of coaches and managers of football, ABD hinted that Dravid might suffer the same. On his YouTube show, de Villiers said, “Sometimes, as you’ve seen in football leagues like the Premier League, coaches and managers are always under pressure to perform and bring trophies home. Once they don’t, they start hearing from the owners who make the decisions for the teams. We don’t know the facts really. It sounds to me that the fact he turned down the other role meant he was sort of kicked out, which is never ideal." He further said, “But maybe Rajasthan have different ideas for the upcoming season. Maybe they want to shake things up a bit and move forward." Read also: Is Shreyas Iyer's captaincy skill the real villain? Ex- Eng Cricket shares verdict Maybe Dravid was upset: de Villiers A "broader role" from coaching would have provided something like "Director of Cricket" or a "mentor" role, which won't be similar to that of a coach. Coaching requires full-time presence on the field, while the rest won't require a daily conversation *with the players. AB de Villiers feels that Dravid probably wanted the coaching responsibilities. ABD feels that it might be an owner's call. Even though he is not certain, he felt that Dravid, despite being upset, wanted the raw connection with the players. ABD said, “I don’t know what exactly happened there. It sort of sounds to me like an owner’s call. They gave him an option to have a broader role in the team, which he turned down. Maybe he was upset and still wanted to be in that dugout. Maybe it was his call. We don’t know, but we’ll find out in the future."
