Wankhede Stadium will honor Ravi Shastri with a special tribute during the IPL 2026 season. The former India all-rounder and ex-head coach will be honoured at the iconic venue for his decades of contribution to Indian cricket. Devendra Fadnavis will attend the grand ceremony later this week on Thursday, April 9. Ravi Shastri will also have a stand inaugurated at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday, April 9. The Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis will preside over the ceremony which will officially rename the stand to honor the former India all-rounder and ex-head coach. Shastri dedicated over 40 years to Indian cricket because of his exceptional performance as a player and his contributions to the sport. As a player, he demonstrated his ability to bowl and bat when he played for India during their first ICC Cricket World Cup victory in England. He established himself as a major figure in Mumbai cricket while becoming one of the first players to achieve the feat of hitting six sixes during a first-class match over. The former cricketer represented India in 80 Tests and 150 ODIs through which he achieved close to 7000 runs and reached 280 wickets across all cricket formats. Ravi Shastri worked as a cricket commentator for the Board of Control for Cricket in India during his 30 years in the profession. Many people consider him to be one of the best commentators who exists today together with Harsha Bhogle. His voice remains connected to multiple famous moments from Indian cricket history especially during India’s 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup victory. He served as the coach of the Indian national team from 2017 until 2021. India achieved its first Test series victories in Australia during the years 2019 and 2021. The team advanced to the semi-finals of the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup which took place in England. The Wankhede Stadium will name stadium gates after both individuals on the same day. Edulji stood as one of the early icons of India Women’s cricket and represented the country in 20 Tests and 34 ODIs between 1976 and 1993. The late Dilip Sardesai achieved recognition as one of India's greatest batters. He scored over 2000 runs during his 30 Test matches and he accumulated more than 10000 runs through his 179 first-class matches while maintaining a batting average of 41.75. The MCA honors three legendary players during IPL 2026 which brings a historical dimension to the fast-paced tournament while recognizing the enduring contributions of players who transformed Indian cricket.
