Wankhede Stadium security manager in Mumbai has been arrested for allegedly stealing 261 Indian Premier League (IPL) jerseys valued at INR 6.52 lakh from the official merchandise store of BCCI. The accused, Farooque Aslam Khan, 43 years old and a Mira Road resident, was recently arrested and is out on bail, said the police. The BCCI storeroom at Wankhede saw Khan leave on June 13, 2025, with a big carton of the jerseys, according to the allegations. There were IPL 2025 jerseys, each worth about INR 2,500. The act of theft went undetected until a regular inventory audit in July found discrepancies in stock. After scanning CCTV cameras, BCCI officials noticed Khan leaving with the box and therefore became suspicious which was followed by a formal police complaint on July 17 at Marine Drive Police Station. The majority of the loot jerseys were sold to a Haryana-based dealer by Khan in online deals, said police. The police during the investigation found that he got in touch with the dealer on social networking websites and informed him that things were offered for sale in a clearance sale as the BCCI office was undergoing renovation. During interrogation, Khan admitted that he used the money made from the sale to fund his online gambling addiction. The money had been deposited straight into his bank account. The dealer from Haryana, who purchased the jerseys, told police he was unaware that the merchandise was stolen. He has been summoned for further questioning. Meanwhile, the authorities are still investigating whether the stolen items were meant for IPL players or public sale through BCCI’s official merchandise channels. Khan was arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for theft and criminal breach of trust. The case has also raised suspicions about the internal security and audit checks at facilities like Wankhede.
