The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) recognized that Wanindu Hasaranga would miss IPL 2026 because his absence had been evident for several weeks. The team has now begun their search for a new player who will fill his position because they spent weeks determining his capacity to play. During LSG's match against Kolkata Knight Riders, Tom Moody the cricket director confirmed this information. The team needed immediate reinforcement because the tournament was advancing into its more active phases. Hasaranga sustained a hamstring injury during Sri Lanka's first match at the T20 World Cup earlier this year and has not played professional cricket since that time. He has not achieved the essential fitness benchmarks which Sri Lanka Cricket requires him to fulfill in order to obtain his NOC for IPL participation. The main candidate to replace him is South Africa allrounder George Linde according to an ESPNcricinfo report. Linde has not yet participated in the IPL but he possesses T20 experience from various leagues which include SA20 the Hundred and Major League Cricket and the PSL. Linde functions as an intelligent all-rounder who recently played for South Africa in the T20 World Cup. He has achieved 218 wickets through his T20 appearances which have exceeded 250 matches. He bats at the lower order which was the responsibility that Hasaranga needed to complete. However, LSG already possesses Shahbaz Ahmed who can perform the same duties as his counterpart. The playing XI includes M Siddharth who delivers strong left-arm spinning abilities while Linde serves as the potential overseas alternative to Shahbaz. His recent performances have not shown positive results for Linde. He obtained one wicket during his four matches in the New Zealand T20 series. LSG appears to evaluate his complete all-round performance value instead of his current performance statistics. Hasaranga has needed two important surgical procedures since 2023 because of severe hamstring problems. His injuries during LPL 2023 caused a Grade 3 muscle tear which prevented him from participating in ODI World Cup 2023 and Asia Cup 2023. After he needed treatment for his recurring hamstring problem, he underwent his second surgical procedure before T20 World Cup 2026 in January 2026 after he visited a Singaporean expert. During early 2024, Hasaranga experienced ongoing heel discomfort in his left foot together with his hamstring injuries. Also Read | David Miller fails after a gusty show! Interestingly, Linde was not among them. The list included Liam Dawson, Rehan Ahmed, Mujeeb ur Rahman, and Mohammad Nabi according to reports. The team has managed to handle Hasaranga's absence better than their expected performance. The bowling unit has become their strongest asset because of their consistent performance. Mohammed Shami has reached an exceptional level of performance that produces significant effects. Prince Yadav has performed so well during the season that he has forced Mohsin Khan and Mayank Yadav to sit on the bench. Avesh Khan has shown decent performance while Anrich Nortje continues to search for his position in the team. Shahbaz Ahmed has received limited chances to play because Digvesh Rathi and M Siddharth have taken control of the spin department. The team remains in good shape despite Mohsin Khan facing minor issues with stiffness.
