Rahul Dravid, the former Indian head coach, said that he admired the batting legend Sunil Gavaskar but could not copy him because the latter was shorter in height. Rahul Dravid had recently spoken to Ashish Kaushik at the Haal Chaal Aur Sawaal Podcast, where he revealed that cricket had a long era of "shortish players" who looked elegant and natural. Even his time had Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting. Speaking on that, he said, "Gavaskar was a beautifully balanced player. I always remember, he always seemed to. There was a stillness when he stood, which is what I admired. I was always slightly taller, so I didn;t copy anything. I just stood in a way that made me feel uncomfortable. Tendulkar again was very balanced. Shorter people have the advantage of looking more balanced because the centre of gravity is lower. That’s what they say. A lot of great batters over the years have been shorter people. Look at Gavaskar, or Tendulkar or a [Brian] Lara or a [Ricky] Ponting… going back to [Donald] Bradman." And then in a subtle blink of a moment, Dravid wittily realized that Virat Kohli, who was his former teammate and later his disciple, was not tall either. And that, Kohli might mind, knowing that Dravid called him short. Dravid added, "Kohli is short-ish. Virat Kohli might not like me calling him shortish, though." And tall players get the first nod with big hitting abilities because it's physics. Actually, tall cricketers can hit big sixes because their long arms act like a bigger lever, giving the bat more speed and power, so the ball flies farther. Giving example to that, Rahul added, "But today, as the game is changing and becoming a lot about power and hitting sixes. The reach of the taller guys is becoming an advantage. Physics will tell you. Kevin Pietersen, Kieron Pollard. Look at the guys who are batting these days, in T20s especially."
