The world hasn't witnessed Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in action in international cricket since the Champions Trophy triumph a few months ago. The two are retired from the Tests and T20Is, and the only format that they are still playing in, is the ODIs. While Virat is 36, the ODI captain Rohit Sharma is 38 now, and there is no guarantee, at least for the time being, if they would be available for the 2027 World Cup. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may perhaps play in India shades, in the Australia ODI series, and then versus South Africa. After that, they may get a window of opportunity to play in the six ODIs vs NZ and ENG, from JAN to Jul 2026. In short, cricketing opportunities will be scarce for them. The bigger question is, will that be sufficient to have Kohli and Rohit prepared for the ODI World Cup 2027? And for that, a source has assured PTI, that a decision on their future may be made soon. “Yes, it will be discussed soon. We still have more than two years for the next World Cup (November 2027). Both Kohli and Rohit will be pushing 40 by then, so, there has to be a clear plan ahead for the big event as our last win was in 2011. We also need to try out a few youngsters in time.” Also Read | End of Workload Excuse? BCCI Plans to End Pick-and-Choose Culture After IND-ENG Tests Their most recent show in the Indian jersey was in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, when India won the trophy for the third time by beating New Zealand in the final at Dubai. Both players now being restricted to ODIs, there is increasing speculation about when the fans will see them in action again for the national team. The following ODI World Cup will take place in 2027, and by then they will both be close to 40 years of age. Surprisingly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was taken aback by their announcement of playing more ODIs. There was a general expectation that they would call it quits after the Champions Trophy triumph. But Rohit, at the post-match press conference, announced his plans to keep playing ODIs. The BCCI is reportedly going to have talks with the pair shortly about their future.
