Vijay Shankar, former Tamil Nadu captain, is reportedly preparing to move north-east after securing his no-objection certificate. According to Sportstar, the 34-year-old all-rounder has received approval from the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) and is likely to join Tripura for the upcoming domestic season. Shankar’s departure comes after several challenging years in Tamil Nadu, where consistent selection has eluded him. He was notably left out of the state squad for the second round of the Buchi Babu Invitational tournament, continuing a trend seen during last year’s Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. A batting all-rounder with international exposure, Shankar has represented India at the World Cup, played 70 First Class matches, scored 3,702 runs at an average of 45.14, and taken 43 wickets. His captaincy record includes three titles: the Vijay Hazare and Deodhar Trophy in 2016-17 and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2021-22. Speaking to Sportstar “He has made immense contributions to TN cricket, and it is appreciated by one and all. Now that he has decided to move away from the state team, we will miss him and wish him the best. At the same time, we have a good talent pool. This now opens up a slot for some of the younger players to grab the opportunity and do well for the team.” Read also: Online Gaming Ban to Cost Cricketers and IPL Big Losses Leadership Depth for Tripura Shankar’s transition mirrors recent movements in domestic cricket. He follows Baba Aparajith, another seasoned Tamil Nadu player who joined Kerala in 2024. The timing also coincides with Hanuma Vihari’s move to Tripura. The 31-year-old former Andhra Pradesh captain and India batter emphasized that Tripura would provide opportunities across all formats, which were limited in Andhra Pradesh. Both Shankar and Vihari are expected to bring significant leadership and experience to Tripura. Observers note that the move may also enhance their prospects for better IPL contracts or potential national consideration. Tripura, traditionally less prominent in domestic competitions, now benefits from two players with substantial domestic and international experience, likely raising both competitiveness and mentoring opportunities for emerging cricketers in the squad.
