Former India captain Kris Srikkanth has called on selectors to pick 14-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi in India's 15-member team for the upcoming Asia Cup T20, beginning September 9. Srikkanth, who once captained India when a teenager Sachin Tendulkar made his debut in 1989, feels Vaibhav is good enough for the top level and should be given an early entry into the senior team. Srikkanth cited Vaibhav's incredible IPL 2025 campaign, where the Rajasthan Royals young gun scored 252 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of above 200. His innings also featured the second-quickest ton in IPL history, which was a 35-ball ton against Gujarat Titans. The teenager also made an impression during India U19's tour to England, where he scored a hundred and consistently performed in the limited-overs as well as four-day format. On a YouTube show, Srikkanth stated: "You have to play bold. Don’t make him wait. Don’t say things like ‘let him mature’. He is already playing with remarkable maturity. His shot-making has been on another level. If I were chairman, I would definitely have him in the 16." Also Read | Will MS Dhoni Join India’s Coaching Staff? Insights by Chopra Samson's Place Under Question in Srikkanth's Squad When selectors are set to finalize India's team on August 19, most of the discussions revolve around the top-order. Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill have been consistent, while there are still strong cases made by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan. Srikkanth further stated that there is doubt over Sanju Samson's inclusion in the team. Srikkanth stated: "Samson is questionable, as per me. My first-choice opener is Abhishek Sharma, no doubt. I will have two more openers. My picks would be Vaibhav Suryavanshi or Sai Sudharsan, with Shubman Gill as an option. If I were selector, I would keep Vaibhav in the 15 for the T20 World Cup. He has been outstanding." He further added: “I think it should be Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Sai Sudharsan. I would take two out of these three. That would be my preference." Since the T20 World Cup final in June 2024, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have both scored so many runs for India in T20Is, usually setting the tone in the powerplay with their aggressive style. But Samson's recent slump in form in the series against England has raised questions about his short-pitched bowling ability, something selectors would consider before the Asia Cup 2025. With competition keen and emerging talent such as Vaibhav making waves, India's last team announcement will be monitored with interest.
