Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is, like, destined to end up playing for India. The real question isn’t really if he will get there, it’s more like when. To become the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in just his second Indian Premier League (IPL) season, and at the age of 15, is really not something ordinary. Still, bringing that kind of talent along is never as simple as it sounds. A lot of young prodigies, they don’t just smoothly move forward once fame, and constant attention show up. MSK Prasad, the former India chief selector, he was in that role from September 2016 to March 2020, thinks the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has to take charge of how the youngster develops. In his view, the board shouldn’t just leave this whole important job completely on the Rajasthan Royals (RR) or any other connected parties while Sooryavanshi’s trajectory keeps climbing. Prasad thinks that either Rahul Dravid , the former India A Under-19 and senior team coach, or VVS Laxman who has been leading the Centre of Excellence since December 2021 , should guide the teenager. Both these men , had really exceptional playing years and they’re generally respected for their leadership, their coaching style , plus this kind of talent for nurturing young cricketers, in a quiet steady way. Prasad stated: “It’s good to see that in a post-match interaction, he (Sooryavanshi) said on Sunday that he needs to improve his fitness. He has been under the tutelage of NCA for quite some time now. See, he is only 15. He should be carefully handled and looked after. He should be carefully monitored. I feel he should be under the tutelage of (VVS) Laxman or (Rahul) Dravid for some time. They are the guys who can keep him humble. At this stage, it’s needed to shape his career in the right manner.” Rahul Dravid Taking Interview of Vaibhav Suryavanshi. pic.twitter.com/yBrClFoKzP — Ramesh Kumar (@kumr_ramesh25) May 21, 2025 Sooryavanshi already shares a strong connection with both legends. Dravid was RR’s head coach during his debut IPL season in 2025, and he was also there at the auction when the franchise signed the youngster for INR 1.10 crore. Likewise, Laxman was overseeing the entire setup when Sooryavanshi got selected for the Under-19 ODI World Cup 2026 squad. As Centre of Excellence chief, he has been closely monitoring the youngster progress for quite some time, so. Once he reaches adulthood, he can make decisions independently, without to rely on anybody much. Until then, Prasad believes that an experienced mentor like Dravid or Laxman should guide the 15 year old and help him navigate the tricky challenges that come with early success, in that way. He continued: “Forget India, he is one of the best in the world. He is undoubtedly a big surprise package. Though he should play for India in T20Is, he should be monitored well for two years, and then he can be on his own. He should slowly start with T20Is, then move to ODIs & other formats. Of course, he has it in him to play the longer formats, as he has shown he can take the best of the world and tear them apart. The best part is he has so much understanding of the game.”
