Former England captain Nasser Hussain has voiced serious doubts about Shubman Gill’s leadership credentials following India’s five-wicket loss to England at Headingley. Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket, Hussain noted that Gill, who debuted as Test captain in the series opener, failed to exhibit the commanding aura that his predecessors—Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma—naturally exuded on the field. Hussain stated, "I thought I saw someone who was finding his way to be honest. You've got to be very careful, first Test match, the people he's taken over from, (Virat) Kohli and then Rohit Sharma, I thought he didn't quite have that on-field aura as the names I have mentioned there. You look down on those two previous names and you immediately saw who was in charge of India." Though Gill scored an impressive 147 in the first innings, Hussain felt the right-hander seemed more like a bystander in critical moments. His presence, Hussain argued, didn’t reflect authority—especially when the game demanded sharp, proactive leadership. Both KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant were frequently seen managing field placements and giving instructions—an indicator of Gill’s hesitancy. Hussain points out “There were a lot of captains, it was a bit of captaincy by committee, which can happen in your early days as a leader because your senior players like Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul want to help you out as much as possible." What troubled Hussain more was Gill’s reactive rather than proactive approach. He noted, “I thought he followed the ball a lot, thought he was reactive as opposed to proactive.” India’s bowling also failed to support Gill's leadership. Outside Jasprit Bumrah, who remained a consistent threat, the attack lacked direction. Ravindra Jadeja, despite his experience, looked out of sync with conditions—a lapse that added to the team’s struggles under Gill’s first-time leadership.
